This past weekend, it really hit the Mysterious Mr. C and me that we are a little more than halfway through the year. And while there are still six months left until we ring in 2017, we realized just how many times we say things like, “Oh we should go do X,” but then never actually do.

In an effort to change that and go on more adventures, we came up with a brief bucket list for the rest of the year full of places we want to go and things we want to do. And since I was feeling in a proactive mood, I decided to make one for the blog as well!

Though I have a tendency to make ridiculously long to-do lists, I purposefully kept this one short and, I think, pretty do-able. I also tried to focus on things that would help me mix up my content a bit and keep the blog interesting, both for you and for me!

1. Review two comic books.

It’s a little sad, and embarrassing, to realize that in over three years of blogging, I’ve only reviewed one comic book – and it wasn’t even a good one at that! As such, I am determined to change that and review at least two other comic books before the year is out.

I am currently leaning towards Renae de Liz’s The Legend of Wonder Woman series, which I have already started, and Jessica Chobot and Erika Lewis’s Firebrand: The Initiation of Natali Presano, since I absolutely love Chobot and share her enjoyment of the supernatural. That said, I am fully aware that I am new to the wide world of comic books, so if you have any favorites that you think I should check out, please let me know!

2. Review one graphic novel.

Likewise, I have never actually read a graphic novel. Shelved and thumbed through them during my days as a bookseller, yes. Read them, no. So of course I want to change that too!

Since DC Comics is releasing a theatrical version of Alan Moore’s classic The Killing Joke, I’m currently aiming for that to be my entry into the genre, but again, I’m open to any and all recommendations you may have!

3/4. Shoot three fashion and three food posts.

As I mentioned in my “Year of the Blog” post back in January, in addition to the things noted above, I also wanted to do more geeky fashion and nerdy food posts. And though I’ve certainly had ideas, it’s quite obvious that I haven’t executed them.

Part of that is due to poor time management on my end, but thanks to new work schedules for both me and C, that should be changing. The other part of it is because I’ve been really self-conscious about doing those sorts of posts and asking C to photograph the results. I am determined, however, to push myself outside of my comfort zone a bit this year, so look forward to seeing more of that kind of content on here soon!

5. Reach out for ARCs.

Speaking of pushing myself outside of my comfort zone, I’ve also decided that one of my bucket list items will be to reach out to the major publishers of all things geeky and nerdy and see if I can get on a list somewhere to receive Advanced Reader Copies of the new books that are coming out in either hardback or paperback.

ARCs, as they are known in the biz, were one of the many perks of being a bookseller, though they can certainly be sent to other people too. A fellow blogger’s recent tweet about reaching out and receiving a copy of a book she had been dying to read prompted me to action! Or at least prompted me to put action on my bucket list.

6. Revamp the look of Geeky Musings.

Lastly, but certainly not least, I want to refresh the look and feel of this here blog. Industry experts say that you should update things about every two years or so, and Geeky Musings is well overdue for a facelift! I’m not planning anything too drastic, but I think revamp would be the perfect way to end the year and kick off a new one!

  1. Oooh I love making to do lists! Yours seems appropriately ambitious. I do graphic novel reviews occasionally, but I’d like to do more. I’ve thought about looking into ARCs, too, but I don’t really think of myself as a “book blogger” per se.
I’m most excited to see your fashion/food posts! Sounds like fun!
I haven’t thought much recently about the “direction” of my blog, but maybe I should make my own to do list. It’s good to have goals.

    • Me too Mei-Mei, though usually they are much more ambitious and impossible to complete! I’m trying to work on that, among other things 🙂

As for the ARCs, I’m not strictly a book blogger either and may not have the kind of reach that prompts them to say “Sure, we’ll send you a free copy of this,” but I figure it couldn’t hurt to ask!

And in terms of direction, that’s something I actually think about a lot and I have all sorts of ideas, but I’ve been really bad at following through. I’m hoping this will help change that!
